With the weather being so warm outside, many homeowners are turning to their air conditioning units to stay cool. While you might assume your unit will always be there working away when you need it, you need to make sure you are doing your part to take care of the unit. One small mistake could end up costing you more than you want to spend right now. Some of the common mistakes made by homeowners with their air conditioning systems are outlined below.

Your unit isn't in the correct location.

Oftentimes, people assume that the location of the unit isn't all that important. However, it is more important than you think. Placing your unit along a side of your home that you might not be using at the moment isn't always the best option. You are better off looking for a place where the unit is out of the sun and close to your home. Less sunlight often means your unit isn't working as hard to keep your home nice and cool. However, that doesn't mean you want a bunch of shrubs around the unit blocking out the sun. Your unit still needs room to breathe.

You never shut your unit off.

Even though you might think you are fine letting your unit run throughout the day, you are using a ton of energy and paying more on your electricity bill. If no one is home during the day, why should your home be a nice and cool 68 degrees? You are better off turning the thermostat up a few degrees when heading out for work and turning it back down upon your return home. Since it only takes a few minutes to get your home to the temperature you desire, it is well worth the wait to save on your energy bill.

Neglecting to change the filter in the unit.

Your air conditioning unit utilizes an air filter to help remove all of the debris and dust before it blows the air inside of your home. At some point in time or another, the filter will end up getting clogged and have to be changed. Your best bet is to check the unit every month and see what the state of your filter is. When the filter gets too dirty, it can cause the unit to freeze up and run rough.

By taking the proper steps, you can keep your unit working great for years to come. Whenever in doubt as to what might be going on with your unit, call upon a service professional like one from Redlands Plumbing Heating & Air Conditioning to come out and take a look at it for you.
